Tips for Choosing the right College

Finding the right college might be difficult because you have to keep many factors in mind before you are definite about where you wish to go for your future education. Choosing the right college may be stressful for some of us, but with a little bit of research, you may find the right college that suits you. Here are some tips that may be useful for when you are ready to search for a colleges:
  1. Create a list of colleges that you might be considering to go to.
  2. Do not eliminate any college from you list just because it is costly and you may not be able to afford it. The prices showed on the websites may not be the price you will be paying.
  3. Never assume that you have to pay the full price for college. Two-thirds of students do not pay the full price.
  4. If you are wealthy, look for schools that provide merit scholarships to rich students. Mostly all colleges do.
  5. Use a college's net price calculator to get a personalized estimate of what that college will cost you and your family.
  6. Do not assume that only A students can earn merit scholarships. At private schools 85 % freshman have earned grants and scholarships from their institutions.
  7. Encourage your child to take college-prep classes and earn good grades. These are two admission factors that school typically value the most.
  8. To increase your chance of getting accepted to a college and earning a merit scholarship, look at a college outside your region.

  10. Do not assume that a student will not qualify for financial aid.
  11. If you seek financial aid, look for generous colleges that provide mostly need-base grants rather than loans.

  13. Do not get hung up in college rankings. US News and World Report's rankings are not always accurate.
  14. If you are disappointed with a financial aid officer, you may negotiate. But just remember to be nice when you go about doing this.

  16. Do not stress out about getting into a college. Three out of four freshman get into their No. 1 choice.

  18. Look for colleges that have high four-year graduation rates. You do not want your child to get stuck in college for five or six years.

  25. Do not assume that and academic department is strong just because the school's overall reputation it the best.
  26. Consider looking beyond brand names to find hidden college gems. In other words, do not go to a college because you have heard may good things about it. The more you research the more you will explore and find better colleges.
  27. Do not consider any colleges under peer pressure. Just because your friends go to a certain college, that does not mean that you should go there as well.
  28. Find a college that provides a well education in the field you want to major in.
  29. Roam college websites. Gather as much detail as you can about a certain college. Create a checklist and see which college fulfills your needs the most.
